With the football season underway, many people across the United States are enjoying the chance to place their bets in states where sports betting is legal. While some states offer retail sports betting facilities only, there are others that provide the convenience and ease of online sports betting, which draws in far more bettors and means big bucks in terms of state revenues.

At present, Maryland is one of those that only offer retail sports betting, but this could soon change. There is speculation that mobile sports betting could be made available in the state very soon with a fall launch, and this is great timing as it will be in the thick of the football season.

As a result, mobile sportsbook operators will see a huge amount of activity if the service does launch this side of Christmas.

An Earlier Launch Could Be Possible

The Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission has previously told Larry Hogan, the state governor, that the process was being worked through as diligently as possible when he pushed for a September launch date having signed sports betting into law in May last year.

At that time, the SWARC chairman said:

I understand many are frustrated that the process of the issue has been time-consuming. I also want everyone to know that SWARC and its support team have been working as diligently and deliberately as we can. SWARC is and has been working through these legal requirements.

The last forecast from the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission was that mobile sports betting was likely to launch next year, possibly in time for Super Bowl 2023. However, the commission has now decided to award licenses to mobile sports betting operators on a rolling basis, and this means that the service could launch far earlier than had been expected.

By giving out licenses on a rolling basis, it will speed up the process and means that the launch could be significantly earlier, something that the state governor was pushing for.

Earlier Launch Would Please NFL Fans

If the launch now comes in the fall rather than next year, it will delight sports fans and will prove hugely beneficial to the state given its timing. The football season is one of the key sporting events of the year, and huge numbers of people place bets on their favorite teams from September until the end of the season.

With the initial expected launch date of February next year, the state would have missed out on the football season for this year. However, if the earlier launch does go ahead, bettors will be able to wager online for the latter half of the season, which means far greater convenience for sports fans. In addition, this earlier launch will bring in a lot of new revenue for the state.

The popularity of online and mobile betting has made it a priority for officials in Maryland, as it could result in a boom in betting activity and a sharp rise in money going into state finances.
