Sports Rebranding: When Professional Teams Changed Their Colors
As the years and decades go by, it’s only natural for sports rebranding to happen. Sometimes, we observe it in cases of teams relocating entirely, but even teams that remain in the same city make changes. This takes the form of sports color changes or even the logo, but the idea is to continually refine the uniform to keep it as modern as possible.
That said, teams will often wear their old jerseys from past generations on throwback nights or to celebrate a specific team.
Below, I’ll examine eight team color changes across all four major sports: the MLB, NHL, NBA, and NFL.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Seattle Seahawks
- New England Patriots
- Houston Astros
- Miami Marlins
- Golden State Warriors
- Denver Nuggets
- Vancouver Canucks
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were founded in 1974, and over the course of this franchise, there have been two distinct periods of sports rebranding: 1976 to 1996 and from then until the present.
When the team began, it had two uniforms with the Bucco Bruce helmet logo and a creamsicle orange color.
In 1997, the sports color scheme changed to red and pewter, along with a skull-and-swords logo. The sports color changes occurred when the Buccaneers benefited from a ballot measure that secured funding for a new stadium.
The Buccaneers still wear these throwback jerseys on occasion, but the change from then to now is one of the most stark team rebrands I can recall.
Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks were another team founded in 1974, and their first uniforms included stylized royal blue and forest green eagle/thunderbird heads based on Kwakwakaʼwakw art masks. The helmet and pants were both silver, and the home jersey was royal blue, along with green, white, and blue stripes.
The jersey underwent minor updates, but the first major change occurred in 2002. The Seahawks were moving to the NFC, and a new stadium was opening, so this became one of the largest team rebrands: the colors were modified to a lighter “Seahawks Blue,” a darker “Seahawks Navy,” and lime green.
Then, there was another major change in 2012 to accompany the new Nike jerseys. There was now a “College Navy,” “Action Green,” and “Wolf Grey.” The jersey was completely modernized. There were many logo color changes over the years as well.
Today, in addition to their new look and team color changes, the Seahawks are a favorite among top sports betting apps users after winning Super Bowl 60.
New England Patriots
From 1960 through 1992, this was the “Pat Patriot” era with him as the logo and the primary colors of red, white, and blue. The red jerseys were the main home uniform.
In 1993, the “Flying Elvis” logo was adopted, and the primary jersey color was a brighter navy blue.
In 2000, the jerseys were slightly modified, with darker tones, silver pants, and more defined striping.
The modern jerseys look fairly similar, except that there’s now a red-and-white stripe on the shoulders. There’s also an alternate uniform reminiscent of the “Pat Patriot” era.
Houston Astros
The Astros uniforms have had massive changes over the years, debuting in 1962 as the Houston Colt .45s. Since then, there have been several sports rebranding moments, including the navy and orange in the mid 1960s to mid 1970s, the Tequila Sunrise rainbow era in the mid 1970s to early 1990s, to navy and gold in the 1990s, and more.
Starting in 2000, the jerseys featured several different colors, but the logo always read “Astros” in cursive across the jersey.
Today, the jersey still bears the team name in bold. The jerseys today are white, grey, and a brighter orange.
When it comes to sports color changes, the Astros have had many.
Miami Marlins
The Marlins were an expansion franchise in 1993, known as the Florida Marlins. Then, in 2012, they became the Miami Marlins, but they didn’t relocate, moving from Sun Life Stadium to LoanDepot Park. However, this brought about significant team color changes.
The Marlins jerseys in the early years had a signature white with black stripes, and the logo was a teal-ish tone.
Following that, the jerseys retained the stripes, but there was also a plain grey jersey, and the logo became bolder and outlined in black.
Then, when the franchise became the Miami Marlins, a complete overhaul occurred, with multicolored lettering on the logo and white, black, and orange uniforms.
Today, the jerseys are fairly the same color, but the word “Miami” is in a stylized font.
Golden State Warriors
After relocating from Philadelphia in 1962, the Warriors changed their name from the San Francisco Warriors to the Golden State Warriors, but have always remained in San Francisco.
Since the change, the jerseys have undergone several iterations; the first, from the late 1960s, are quite similar to those seen today, but they also included “The City” on them. When the team first moved, it wore a basic navy blue with yellow and red stripes, and some other uniforms were white with gold lettering and a blue outline.
In the 1970s, the color scheme remained intact, but instead of “The City,” it now read “Warriors” with an outline of the state of California.
Then in the late 1980s, the jersey became somewhat more basic, featuring white and variations of blue, with “Warriors” spelled out at an angle.
From there, the 1990s and 2000s saw a noticeable change with several jersey designs, including new stylized lettering in an orange hue on the side. There was also a dark navy blue jersey with yellow lettering and red stripes on the side.
Then, in the 2010s to now, the jersey went back to its roots, featuring the Golden Gate Bridge at the center; instead of “The City,” it reads “Golden State Warriors” around the logo, with gold stripes on the sleeves.
Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets are another team that has seen several team color changes. Here are some of the highlights:
- 1960s: Red jersey, similar to the Chicago Bulls.
- 1970s: White, Gold, Purple, and Blue Jerseys with varying logos.
- 1980s to early 2000s: A vibrant and multi-colored jersey with a rainbow skyline.
- Early 2000s: Powder blue and white uniforms.
- Late 2010s to Present: White and dark navy blue with yellow lettering.
Vancouver Canucks
Of all the NHL teams, the Canucks have undergone the most dramatic color changes.
The team debuted in the 1970s with a navy blue, green, and white look across its jerseys before converting to black, yellow, and red in the late 1970s and into the early 1990s.
From there, the jerseys remained fairly similar, but the yellow-dominant jersey was replaced with one that was mostly white.
Later, a jersey was introduced in the 1990s that was black with a yellow and black stripe, with red filling out the rest.
In the early 2000s, the color scheme shifted to a blended blue and red, then later reverted to its roots, dating back to when they were founded.
