Toxic Sports Fans and the 7 Teams They Represent

Fire Nico Sign

With every fan base across all professional sports, there are going to be toxic sports fans. It’s just a fact of life. Not everyone within a fandom is going to be respectful.

However, some are known for being the most toxic sports fan bases for a reason, whether that’s attacking fans, throwing things at players, using racial slurs, and more.

With that, below is a list of the seven worst fan bases in sports.

Dallas Mavericks

According to a study by CCN, which analyzed 700,000 comments across the NFL, NBA, NHL, and more, the Dallas Mavericks were found to be the most toxic fanbase, with 52% of comments flagged for “toxic language.”

Of course, much of this is likely linked to the trade by former general manager Nico Harrison that sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. In return, the Mavericks got Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick.

Following the trade, Harrison said that he believed defense won championships, and at the time, Doncic was due for a massive contract.

“We really feel like we got ahead of what was going to be a tumultuous summer, him being eligible for the supermax and also a year away from him being able to opt out of any contract,” Harrison told the Dallas Morning News [h/t ESPN]. “And so we really felt like we got out in front of that. We know teams, they’ve had it out there, teams have been loading up to try to sign him once that comes available.”

Needless to say, this trade, along with the rationale behind it, enraged fans and created one of the most toxic sports fan bases, prompting chants of “Fire Nico!” and endless makeshift merchandise denigrating Harrison.

Davis lasted two seasons with the Mavericks and played in only 29 games. If you browsed around the best betting apps, this trade, coupled with Davis’s seemingly never-ending injuries, made them fall way down the list of NBA futures markets.

So, why are fan bases so toxic? Sure, some are just straight-up awful to fellow fans or players. However, in the case of the Mavericks, I’ll never say toxicity is warranted. Still, sometimes the fans’ opinion about something is right, and they get aggravated when executives, who are paid millions, don’t see it their way.

Dallas Cowboys

Maybe “toxic sports fans” isn’t always the right descriptor to use for Cowboys fans—though some would label their loyalty somewhat toxic—many would refer to them as annoying, or, in the case of former pass rusher Randy Gregory, yes, they are, in fact, toxic.

Back in 2022, Gregory ended up signing a long-term deal with the Denver Broncos, but he also took to Twitter (now X) to lambast the fans and ownership.

The Cowboys, known as America’s Team, simply haven’t had any legitimate NFL playoff success since the 1990s.

Their ownership, led by Jerry Jones, has also been tough to defend, including the trade before the 2025-26 season that sent Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Fans were divided, but even Cowboys content creators were surprised by the group of fans that seemingly try to tear down whatever players leave the team.

Also, from personal experience, the sports media have helped make the Cowboys one of the worst fan bases in sports, simply because of how many head-scratching topics involving them come up.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles, and really, Philadelphia fans as a whole, have always been a tough bunch. The toxicity dates back to 1968, when fans attended a game between the Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings. The night before, there was heavy snow, and the Santa Claus that was booked to appear didn’t show because of the storm.

So, they picked out a fan dressed as Santa, Frank Olivo, who was hit with over 100 snowballs, and he was also hit with other objects like beer bottles and hoagies.

The Eagles’ PR director at the time also didn’t care for the chosen Santa.

Overall, this incident was pretty hilarious, but of course, throwing beer bottles is a bit far.

Well, that continued as before the Eagles’ playoff game during the 2025-26 season began, fans were seen and recorded outside the stadium throwing beer cans at 49ers fans from across a fence.

Look, I’m all for being a tough crowd, but throwing beer bottles at people just walking by is just ridiculous.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers are easily the best team in Major League Baseball right now, and while there are fans who spoil the bunch for the rest, there have been some serious incidents outside of Dodgers games that go far beyond toxic and into criminal territory.

In 2011, there was a horrendous and serious incident in which San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow was brutally beaten in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium.

In the attack, he suffered brain damage, and years later, he recounted the incident and said the attacks “took his life away.”

“I was a healthy paramedic. Loved my job, loved my family, and boom – my life changed like that,” Stow said in an interview.

He said he and the people he was with were picked out because they were wearing Giants gear.

Stow was in a coma for nine months and had to re-learn to walk, talk, and write.

Of course, this is an incredibly serious incident and not every fan in the Dodgers fan base would do this, but these types of things tend to make people think the Dodgers are among the worst fan bases in sports.

New York Yankees

The Yankees organization has brought its fans nearly 30 World Series titles, and with that may have come some fans being a bit spoiled.

During the 2024 World Series, a fan grabbed Mookie Betts’ glove as he went up to try to rob a home run. The fan was banned indefinitely.

Also, in 1996, Jeffrey Maier, a fan in the stands, reached over the wall to catch a Derek Jeter home run. The play was called a home run, had a major impact on the game, but if you watch it back, the ball was clearly going to go off the wall and be, perhaps, a double.

There have been several other moments of Yankee fandom toxicity, including Yankees fans throwing batteries, coins, balls, and garbage at players.

In 2022, the Yankees had a walk-off win at home over the Cleveland Guardians, and as the Guardians outfielders were running toward the ball in right field, literal trash was thrown at them.

In a list of the 10 worst fan bases in sports, the Yankees would be close to the top.

Boston Celtics

Boston sports fans had quite the period of championships, beginning in 2001 with the New England Patriots, and it seems like every year or so, one of their major sports teams, including the Celtics, is in the hunt.

Having lived in New England my whole life, I can confirm the fan base here, like the Yankees, is spoiled.

Recently, a Celtics fan was seen yanking on Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry’s arm as he walked to the locker room.

In 2022, a fan was arrested at the TD Garden for throwing a water bottle at former Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving. At the time, he was playing for the Brooklyn Nets.

Many players have also discussed their experience with Boston fans, with LeBron James, Draymond Green, Irving, and Marcus Smart saying they’ve all heard racial slurs from Boston fans. It’s hard to defend what is seemingly one of the most toxic sports fan bases.

There’s even more, but you get it—it’s toxic sports fans and pathetic.

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks have suffered some Game 7 losses in the Stanley Cup Finals, and needless to say, the fan base didn’t take it well.

Again, it crossed over from toxicity to criminal and goes beyond simply being one of the worst fan bases in sports.

The most famous incident came in 2011 when fans set cars on fire, looted stores, and smashed windows after losing the Boston Bruins.

In all, there were more than 150 injuries and over 100 arrests.

There was a crowd of around 100,000 people before the melee began.

A similar incident happened in 1994 when they lost Game 7 to the New York Rangers. That resulted in about 200 injuries and more than $1 million in property damage.
