It has been revealed that Wynn Las Vegas is set to host the inaugural Netflix Cup on Tuesday, November 14. This marks a significant milestone for Netflix, as it takes its first steps into live sports broadcasting, bringing together well-known athletes from two of its popular series, Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing.

The Netflix Cup is set to be a thrilling match-play golf tournament set against the backdrop of the prestigious Wynn Golf Club. This is the sole 18-hole championship golf course situated on the famous Las Vegas Strip.

Participants will include a solid line-up of F1 drivers and PGA Tour golfers, and they will engage in a unique and competitive showdown just days before the Las Vegas Grand Prix transforms the Strip from November 16-18.

A Huge Transition

Netflix’s first venture into live sports will be a huge transition for the streaming giant, particularly given that co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated earlier this year that the company would primarily focus on ‘sports-adjacent programming.’ The Netflix Cup will enable the entertainment giant to dip its toes into the live sports arena, showcasing athletes from two series that are considered ‘sports-adjacent’ shows.

The event will feature four dynamic teams, each comprising a PGA Tour golfer and an F1 driver. The line-up boasts some of the biggest names in both sports, with PGA Tour represented by Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas.

The lineup from F1 features drivers Alex Albon (Williams Racing), Pierre Gasly (BWT Alpine F1 Team), Lando Norris (McLaren Racing), and Carlos Sainz (Scuderia Ferrari).

These athletes will engage in an eight-hole match, which will end in a showdown between the top two teams to determine the champions of the Netflix Cup.

In a press release, Emily Prazer, Chief Commercial Officer of Las Vegas Grand Prix, Inc., said:

It’s only fitting that we kick off our inaugural race weekend with a fun event that can be streamed by F1 and PGA Tour fans around the globe.

Gabe Spitzer, Vice President of Nonfiction Sports at Netflix, also expressed excitement and highlighted the potential of the Netflix Cup to boost fan engagement across the globe. Spitzer said that the Netflix Cup would take energy to the next level with competition between global sports stars.

Excitement from the President of Wynn Las Vegas

The event will undoubtedly prove fruitful for the host, which is Wynn Las Vegas. It could help to bring even more people through the doors at a time when there will already be many people visiting and staying on the Las Vegas Strip due to the F1 race.

Steve Weitman, President of Wynn Las Vegas, expressed his excitement about hosting the event, noting the Wynn Golf Club’s history of unique matchups and the significance of adding the Netflix Cup to its legacy.

Officials have said that the Netflix Cup will deliver a unique and exciting live sports experience for sports fans. It will combine the thrill of competition with the global reach of streaming entertainment.
