The final Grand Slam of 2023 will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City starting Monday. It will be the 143rd edition of the tournament, and a prize of $3 million awaits the singles’ champions this year.

All eyes will be on Novak Djokovic, who returns to Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2021. A frustrating wait for the 36-year-old has come to an end, as he was not allowed to enter the US due to his unvaccinated status against COVID-19.

Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alacarz, the 2022 winners, will try to defend their 2000 ranking points. Meanwhile, Djokovic is still hungry for more history and records. The Serb was denied a shot at the Calendar Grand Slam by Alcaraz at Wimbledon last month.

But he is hunting for a 24th Grand Slam title that will equal Margaret Court’s all-time record, surpass Serena Williams’ record of 23 in the Open Era, and extend his record among the men, making him the only man with 24 singles Major titles.

US Open 2023: Top Picks

Men’s Singles:

Alcaraz overthrew Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final in an epic five-set match, proving he has what it takes to beat the 23-time Major winner at a Grand Slam. These two are the top picks to lift the trophy, especially after their tough three-set battle in the Cincinnati final. Both have an equal chance of lifting the trophy.

The top two have met three times this year, with the Serb leading the head-to-head by 2-1, but the overall head-to-head is 2-2. It could be anybody’s game if both make it to the final on September 10. However, they will face a challenge from players like Holger Rune, Sinner, Medvedev, and 2023 French Open finalist Casper Ruud.

Women’s Singles:

Swiatek is the top favorite to defend her title at Flushing Meadows successfully. The Pole has not relinquished the World No. 1 spot since April 4, 2022. She has won four singles titles this season, including defending her French Open crown in a nerve-wracking three-set battle against Karolina Muchova.

Sabalenka has been hot on Swiatek’s heels all year, with three titles, including the first hard court Grand Slam, the Australian Open. Since Swiatek has struggled in Montreal and Cincinnati, Sabalenka will try capitalizing on that. Gauff and Pegula provide hope for a home US Open champion for the first time since Sloane Stephens in 2017.

US Open 2023: Predictions

Men’s Singles:

Alcaraz will be the man to beat at the 2023 US Open, with a first successful Grand Slam title defense and the World No. 1 ranking on the line for the Spaniard. Djokovic, who is just 20 points behind Alcaraz after his Cincinnati victory, will pose a significant challenge for the youngster, as the final in Cincinnati already proved.

However, with the US Open taking place on a hard court, players like Medvedev, Sinner, Ruud, Rune, and Tsitsipas will pose a challenge to the number one and two on their way to the final.

Medvedev already beat Djokovic in the final in 2021 to lift his first Grand Slam title. Meanwhile, a new rivalry is budding between youngsters Alcaraz, Sinner, and Rune. Tsitsipas could also make it all the way, having lifted his first title of the year at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos earlier this month.

Women’s Predictions:

Swiatek will bid to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2013 to defend her US Open title. She is the favorite to retain her title and the No. 1 ranking at the final Major tournament of the year.

Sabalenka proved her skills at a hard court Major by winning the title in Melbourne this year. However, she faced defeat against the Pole in the 2022 US Open semifinals.

Meanwhile, American youngsters Pegula and Gauff are contenders to make a deep run. Gauff registered her first career win over Swiatek in the Cincinnati semi final, whereas Pegula bested her in the Montreal semifinal. Rybakina was the runner-up in Australia and won the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, making her another contender to make a deep run.
