Michigan’s season was marred by inconsistency. The Wolverines only went 11-9 in Big Ten Conference play and had an embarrassing 14-point loss early in the season to Central Florida. Many argue that Juwan Howard’s team was lucky to even make it to the Big Dance, much less as an 11 seed.

Tennessee had a great year. The only blemishes on an otherwise impressive showing was an overtime loss to a decent Texas Tech squad and a blowout loss to conference rivals Kentucky. The Volunteers made easy work of mid-major Longwood to advance.
Tennessee is one of the top defenses in the country according to their opponents’ offensive rating. They only allow 90.7 points against them per 100 possessions, 10th in the nation. They also have the third-best defensive efficiency in the country. Stifling Michigan’s potent offense will be key.
Tennessee’s defense relies on its ability to force a high number of turnovers. They have the seventh-most steals in the country.
Their star guard Kennedy Chandler averages an absurd 2.5 steals per game across 30.8 minutes, to go along with his team-leading 13.8 points per game.
This actually highlights Tennessee’s weak ability to play inside the paint. Regardless, Rick Barnes has kept his reputation as a defensive-minded coach.
On the other side of the ball, the Vols are below average shooters, with a 53.3% true shooting percentage and a 50.3% effective field goal percentage. Tennessee needs shots to fall to keep up with Michigan’s solid offense.

Michigan had a weird season, to say the least. They got crushed by a far inferior Central Florida team, and they promptly plummeted out of the national top-25. Not to mention Coach Juwan Howard’s bizarre suspension for punching an assistant from arch-rivals Wisconsin in a brawl.
After sitting out five games as punishment, Howard came back in a big way as he led Michigan to an upset win over Colorado State in the first round.
Many experts said Michigan is lucky to even be in the tournament but they won their first game in upset fashion. And it wasn’t even close. They beat a good Colorado State squad by 12 points.
Center Hunter Dickinson abused the Rams offense inside on his way as he scored a whopping 21 points in 35 minutes. He will need to continue this dominance in the paint against a Tennessee team that is much smaller on the interior.
The key to Michigan’s success will be its ability to take care of the ball. The Wolverines are good at limiting turnovers, but Tennessee is among the best in the business at forcing them.
