It was revealed over recent weeks that the launch of online sports betting in Michigan could be delayed until 2021 due to problems with timing and regulations. Many were hoping that the launch would go ahead in the run-up to Christmas, but this now looks very unlikely.

However, this has not stopped a number of major sportsbook operators from launching special deals ready for when the launch does go ahead. Several major operators have already been trying to entice new members with special promotions, and this could continue as the state gets closer and closer to a full launch.

Not Enough Time to Go Live in 2020

While rules for mobile betting were submitted in the first week of October, officials were aware that this may not leave them with enough time for the launch to take place this year. This was due to there not being enough session days.

An official from the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, Richard Kalm, said:

We’re counting session days and it doesn’t look like we’re going to get 15 session days in if we just let this run out to the end of the year. So conceivably, it would have to roll over to the next session in January and we would start another 15-day clock.

Although it looks likely that the launch will now be in the early part of 2021, some sportsbooks are not wasting any time in getting prepared, launching promotional schemes to encourage people to sign up with them even before online betting is possible.

This is good news for sports fans who are looking forward to the launch of mobile sports betting, as they can get special deals and promotions even before the launch, which they can then use once online sports betting goes live.

Among the sportsbook operators offering special deals is FanDuel, which is hoping to encourage people to register prior to the launch with free betting money. For those who sign up before the service launches, there is a promotion of $100 in free bets to enjoy. This includes free money for both the sportsbook and the online casino.

Another sportsbook giant hoping to attract new members with special promotions is DraftKings. This operator is offering up to $200 in free betting money for those who sign up before online betting goes live. Again, this is split between the online sportsbook and the online casino, so everyone will be able to enjoy spending the free betting money.

A Boon for the State

While the delays with the launch of online sports betting will cause disappointment for many officials and sports fans, it will come as a real boon to the state. Like other states across the country, Michigan has faced huge economic damage because of the global pandemic, and officials are keen to get back on track as soon as they can.

Online sports betting will provide another stream of revenue not just for operators but also for the state. This will then help them to develop and maintain valuable services.
