Another Record for the Empire State

New York has reported another record-breaking month in 2025. With a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $248.9 million, May beat the previous record holder, January ($247 million), by approximately 0.8%. The state’s handle also remained high, exceeding $2 billion for the third month in a row. Here are some official numbers released by the state’s Gaming Commission:

Month Online Sports Betting Handle Online Sports Betting GGR
January $2,480,723,678 $247,046,629
February $1,975,603,982 $184,812,648
March $2,439,979,634 $161,828,221
April $2,153,262,045 $192,705,547
May $2,211,676,705 $248,906,754

The above table shows a comparison between the monthly mobile sports wagering handles and GGRs in the period January – May 2025. As you can see, the year started off strong, with January benefiting from the NFL playoffs and college football bowl games, all of which are major betting events for the Empire State.

February was a slower month, as reflected in both its handle and GGR. The March Madness led to a significant spike in the handle, which was recorded at approximately 2.44 billion. However, there was a further decrease in GGR in the same month, possibly due to more aggressive promotions or better odds offered by the available sportsbooks in New York.

The start of the NBA and NHL playoffs in April kept the monthly handle high. The New York sportsbooks were also more profitable, with a total GGR of around $193 million. And while May had a lower handle compared to the ones reported in January and March, it’s the undisputed leader in revenue. The NBA and NHL playoffs and the Kentucky Derby were among the events responsible for the month’s impressive success.
