With the 2022-23 NFL regular season ending recently, it’s time to reflect on some of the moments and trends that have defined this phase of the tournament. These are the events that impacted both die-hard fans and the casuals who occasionally bet on football, read on and see what stood out to us.

The Los Angeles Rams’ disintegration

It wasn’t that long ago when every pundit, journalist, and fan praised the LA Rams for following through with the go-for-broke strategy that won them Super Bowl LVI. The same strategy has seen them end this regular season with a 5-11 win-loss record.

Teams that win the Super Bowl often face a slight decline in the following season, but they don’t destruct like this. It was even more surprising considering they had retained the services of their star players: Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, Jalen Ramsay, and Aaron Donald.

Winning a Super Bowl is extremely difficult. The Rams can’t have too many regrets, but on the off-chance that they didn’t win the Super Bowl last season – it could be because they had an off day or an important player got injured – the entire plan would’ve been deemed a disaster. The margins are so tight, and this makes the Rams a fascinating case study on the best approach to team-building and recruitment and the importance of role players.

The Vikings’ incredible comeback

Week 15 of the NFL season saw the Minnesota Vikings complete the largest comeback in NFL history. The Vikings were down 33-0 against the Indianapolis Colts but would go on to win 39-36 in overtime. Those who were betting on NFL games that weekend would be well aware of the odds-defying comeback. Those who had made a wager when the Vikings were down by 33 points are sure to have made the earnings of a lifetime, given that the Colts were given lines in the region of -20,000.

For the Colts’ Matt Ryan, who was the quarterback for the Falcons when Tom Brady led the Patriots to the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, this was all too familiar a nightmare. On that night, the Patriots were trailing 28-3 before overturning their 35-point deficit.

The Vikings’ Kirk Cousins is no Tom Brady, and the Vikings aren’t that Patriots side. It was a remarkable turnaround, with the half-time talks from players and staff already becoming the stuff of legend. Ryan was also the subject of many memes following the loss. It seems like, despite all the success he has had over the years, the former NFL MVP can’t escape the internet’s wrath.

Deshaun Watson’s return

Quarterback Deshaun Watson made his NFL return by facing his former employers, the Houston Texans, in Week 13 of the NFL. He was also making his first appearance for the Cleveland Browns after a two-year layoff from football.

Watson had established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league over the last couple of years, but multiple claims of sexual assault allegations prevented him from taking to the field as investigations and penalties fell in place.

With all but one civil suit settled, he was allowed to get back onto the football field, but only after serving an 11-game suspension from the NFL. Watson wasn’t at his best on the day but was part of a side that won 27-14. The Browns have a 7-9 record as things stand. Watson’s focus will be on getting fit this season before getting back to his best by the start of next season.

The football world unites to get behind Damar Hamlin

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during the Monday Night Football match between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17. Hamlin suffered the attack right after a tackling sequence involving Bengals receiver Tee Higgins.

It has since been reported that the 24-year-old is showing signs of recovery and communicating with doctors. All the NFL teams changed their icons on Twitter to an image with the caption ‘Pray For Damar 3’ to pay tribute to the Buffalo Bills star.

The match was ultimately canceled and taken off the schedule. The NFL could not have prepared for this as such a situation has never occurred in the competition’s long history. Sports figures around the world have rallied around Hamlin, who is still recovering at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

What stood out in the aftermath and is sure to be remembered for years to come was the response from the football community, with all barriers of rivalry falling immediately as fans from all over stood in solidarity with Hamlin. Some broadcasters also raised their game, and the message that football players are ultimately human beings who put their bodies and lives at risk came to the fore.
