Following its recent launch of online sports betting, the state of Tennessee has approved a number of sportsbooks. Gaming officials have been working to approve the applications of more sportsbook operators, to add to the four that launched when sports betting went live in the state.

It was announced recently that another handful of sportsbooks had been given the green light by gaming officials in the state. However, these latest sportsbook operators face the disappointment of not being able to take bets on the up-and-coming Super Bowl – the biggest betting event of the year.

While the four sportsbooks that have already launched are ready for this big sporting event, officials have said that the newest approvals will be unlikely to launch in time.

Four Sportsbooks Available in the State

When sports betting went live in the state recently, four sportsbooks were approved and launched. They are now already live and able to reap the rewards of the Super Bowl event. This year, conditional approval has been given to the Churchill Downs Incorporated’s TwinSpires platform, WynnBET, and William Hill.

This will bring the number of sportsbooks in the state up to seven. However, not all of them will be able to launch before Super Bowl LV.

A meeting was recently held by lottery officials to see what could be done to ensure the newest approvals could be launched before the event on February 7th, 2021. However, following the meeting, it was confirmed that they would not be able to launch on time.

One sports betting analyst, Chris Altruda, said:

The Super Bowl is the biggest single sports betting event in the country over the course of the year, so at the very least, you want to be up and operational to have it as a foundation that carries you to the next big sporting event.

The news will cause disappointment for the sportsbooks in question, as this is a huge event that brings in a lot of bets and money. However, Altruda also said that there were multiple days of increased betting from the NCAA Tournament, and this would help to soften the blow for the sportsbooks that are unable to launch by February 7th.

Existing Sportsbooks Enjoying Great Success

The story will be a very different one for the four sportsbooks that have already launched in the state. These are DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Action 24/7, which is a local betting operator. These four sportsbooks will be able to benefit from the increased level of betting during Super Bowl, adding to what has been a very successful period since they launched.

The four sportsbooks have enjoyed superb figures since they launched in Tennessee late last year. Over the course of November and December, the sportsbooks are thought to have taken over $312 million in online bets. This equated to more than $27 million in revenue for the sportsbook operators and more than $5 million in taxes for the state.

Many are now looking forward to seeing how a major event such as Super Bowl affects betting activity in the state.
