According to recent reports, New Hampshire saw an impressive rise in sports betting revenue in September. This was the month that marked the start of the hugely popular football season, which brings the traditional summer slowdown to an end and brings out eager bettors in their droves.

The New Hampshire Lottery has reported a substantial 84.8 percent increase in gambling revenue for the month of September, with total earnings of $6.17 million. This surge in revenue is largely down to the popularity of the football season, with many sports fans turning out to place bets on their favorite teams.

However, the figures show that despite this impressive monthly increase, there was a decrease in sportsbook revenue of around $1.18 million compared to September 2022.

Increase in Online and Retail Sports Betting

New Hampshire gaming regulators provided sports gambling revenue in three categories, which were online, retail, and combined.

When it came to online betting, revenue soared from roughly $3 million to just over $5.5 million. Retail sportsbook revenue also saw a significant leap from approximately $270,000 to just under $610,000. In total, revenue experienced an impressive overall surge, passing the $6.1 million mark. This was a marked increase from the $3.3 million reported in August 2023.

The New Hampshire Lottery’s September 2023 revenue report further showed a monthly increase in the sports betting handle, which increased from $34.8 million in August to an impressive $59.2 million in September. This data is further evidence of the huge popularity and engagement in sports betting during football season within the state.

While the latest figures come as good news for operators and the state, when looking at a year-on-year comparison, the figures are less optimistic.

According to PlayUSA:

While a month-on-month comparison is promising for New Hampshire, yearly comparisons are the exact opposite. Over the past year, online sports betting revenue has topped $5.5 million seven times, so September’s revenue wasn’t groundbreaking. On the retail side, revenue figures have surpassed $600,000 five times over the past 12 months.

Figures show that total betting revenue experienced a 16 percent decrease compared to the same month in 2022, with online revenue experiencing a 28 percent decline during the same period.

According to officials, projections anticipate a continued rise in sports betting engagement in New Hampshire. Hopes are high for revenue to approach the $7 million mark, with the betting handle potentially exceeding $62 million in the upcoming month.

This optimistic forecast is based on the ongoing betting frenzy as the football season continues and sports fans continue to wager both online and in person.

Major Events to Look Forward To

While the football season will continue to lead to increasing betting activity for the coming couple of months, there are also other major events for the state to look forward to. This includes the 2024 Super Bowl in February, which is also likely to lead to a surge in sports betting activity.

Following this, sportsbook operators will benefit from the popularity of March Madness before the traditional summer slowdown begins again.
