Over the past ten months, the global pandemic has caused chaos and devastation for many individuals and businesses across the globe. Businesses within a wide range of industries have suffered, with many forced to close temporarily and some shutting down permanently due to the impact of the pandemic.

Among the industries to have suffered are brick-and-mortar casinos and retail sportsbooks. However, one official has recently reported that innovation and growth for the US mobile sports betting industry have moved forward in leaps and bounds as a result of the situation.

More People Turning to Mobile Sports Betting

According to Amanda Triest, managing partner of Cardinal Communications, more and more people in the United States have been turning to online sports betting since the initial outbreak of the pandemic back in March 2020.

While things for the industry as a whole looked worrying at first due to the shutdown of live sports events during the first wave of the pandemic, online sportsbooks quickly found ways to adapt and offer alternatives. This meant that sports fans were able to continue wagering even while the major live sports events were cancelled.

An official from sports betting giant FanDuel spoke about the way in which sportsbooks had adapted to the changing situation. He said:

Over the past several months, we’ve prioritized offering customers innovative games to play and new forms of entertainment, giving them more ways to win than ever before, across major sports and marquee events not tied to sports, such as political debates, awards shows, reality TV competitions, and more.

Not only have sportsbooks evolved in terms of their offerings due to the pandemic, but legalized sports betting has now been introduced in more states. This means that more people than ever now have access to online and mobile sportsbooks, ensuring that sports betting can continue despite ongoing lockdowns and stay at home orders.

Crucial During the Pandemic

The evolution and expansion of digital sports betting facilities have proven crucial during the past year and will continue to be so moving forward for the foreseeable future. While there is now a vaccine program being rolled out, the second wave still has a firm grip on the nation and there is no indication of when society can get back to normal.

Many people do not yet feel confident about going out to venues such as casinos and retail sportsbooks due to the risk of infection. In addition, there are still various restrictions in place such as capacity caps at venues where sportsbooks are located. All of this has an impact on the number of wagers placed and the handle taken by sportsbooks.

With access to online and mobile sports betting, sports fans are able to get online and place their bets whenever they wish to from the comfort of their own homes. This means that sportsbooks are able to recoup some of the losses incurred due to the restrictions placed on physical venues, and states where mobile sports betting is legal can bring in much-needed tax revenue.
