According to a recent report, the majority of sports betting in the United States now takes place online. Furthermore, this is expected to increase as a result of more and more states legalizing online sports betting across the country.

As things stand, more than 80 percent of sports betting in the country takes place online, according to the Associated Press. Due to the number of states already pushing to legalize mobile sports betting in the near future, this could increase rapidly with more and more people able to place their bets via their computers and mobile devices.

Ahead of the Predictions

Back in 2019, officials from the East Coast Gaming Congress made a prediction that 90 percent of sports betting in the United States would be done online within five to ten years. However, the country is now well ahead of this prediction, with more than 80 percent of betting already taking place online.

The prediction was made prior to the first wave of the global pandemic, which changed the face of sports betting. With casinos closed for several months, along with retail sportsbooks, there was a surge in online sports betting activity. Despite casinos and venues reopening, the popularity of placing bets online has remained and is expected to increase.

Many people are enjoying the ability to place bets from the comfort of their own homes on their computers and devices, according to Rush Street Interactive CEO Mattias Stetz. He said:

Sports fans are enjoying the option of betting from the comfort of their homes.

He added that 87 percent of all sports betting through his company was carried out online, and this included destinations where people also had the choice of betting in person.

The figures show that on a national basis, 81 percent of bets are now placed online just two years after experts made the prediction. In the country’s biggest sports betting marketing, New Jersey, a staggering 92 percent of sports betting was carried out online last year.

A Figure That Is Set to Increase

According to many experts, the number of sports fans betting online is set to continue rising, and this means that the national 90 percent prediction could be realized far sooner than many had ever anticipated.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, many people have become used to betting online. In addition, more states have since come on board with online sports betting. This has enabled more people to enjoy the convenience of placing bets from the comfort of their own homes using computers and mobile devices.

In addition to this, many other states are now keen to legalize online betting, particularly given the financial devastation brought about by the pandemic. Many believe that legalizing sports betting could help to increase state revenues, which can help to make up for some of the losses.

This could then also help to maintain vital services in the states where it is legalized, which have come under threat due to the decrease in tax revenue states have been forced to face.
