Online sports betting has gained huge popularity over the past year, with a rising number of states legalizing online sportsbooks. For many sports fans, this has provided the ultimate in ease and convenience, particularly with the ongoing risk of casino closures due to the global pandemic.

Virginia is one of the states that now offer digital sports betting, so sports fans can continue to place bets even if physical casinos are forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those betting in the state will be able to choose from a range of online and mobile sportsbooks, and one of the key ones to be approved over recent weeks is sportsbook giant FanDuel.

The First Sports Betting Permit

It was announced recently that FanDuel had received the first mobile sports betting permit to operate in Virginia. The permit was authorized by the Virginia Lottery and enables the sportsbook giant to start providing access to a range of sports for fans to bet on. Since then, another major sportsbook, DraftKings, has also launched digital sports betting in the state.

For FanDuel, this marks the ninth state where it now offers digital sports betting facilities. The provider offers access to a wide range of sports for fans to wager on, and they can benefit from placing their bets from anywhere in the state without the need to go into a physical venue.

The new online platform in Virginia also provides fans with a range of payment and betting options, as well as a smooth and entertaining betting experience. In addition, those signing up to the platform can look forward to some great promotions as the sportsbook establishes itself in the state.

Mike Raffensperger, CMO of FanDuel Group, said they:

Take things like responsible gaming, knowing our customer’s identity, ensuring they are of age, and frankly betting with us is more fun. We’re more generous. Case in point, anybody who’s first bet on our sportsbook we will refund you up to $1,000 if you lose your first bet.

He added that this was just an example of the promos and benefits that sports fans could look forward to when signing up to place bets on the FanDuel online platform.

A Lifeline for Sports Fans

The availability of online sports betting in Virginia will provide a valuable lifeline for sports fans in the state. When casinos were forced to close during the first quarter of 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19, many found themselves unable to place bets.

However, in states where online sports betting was legal, fans were able to continue wagering on a range of activities even when the world of live sports was shut down for a while.

With a second wave of the pandemic now tearing through the country, there are fears that similar closures could be seen once again. However, for those who want to continue enjoying sports betting, access to digital sportsbooks will provide them with the means of placing bets even if brick-and-mortar locations are closed.
