According to recent reports, there has been a change to the threat level for the upcoming Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas.

In a move to bolster security measures, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has escalated the threat level for the inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix. The event, which is scheduled to take place from November 16 to 18, is now categorized under Security Level 2, reflecting its significance on both national and international scales.

The threat level system used by the DHS is made up of five distinct levels, with Level 1 indicating minimal risk and Level 5 denoting the highest security concerns.

The newly assigned Security Level 2 means officials will have to take a comprehensive approach when it comes to security, potentially involving federal interagency support. This elevated security status is an indication of the event’s importance and the need for stringent safety protocols.

An Array of Security Enhancements

Officials said that the change to Security Level 2 means that there is a requirement for an array of security enhancements to be put into place for the Grand Prix.

This could include the deployment of explosive detection canine teams, meticulous venue screening procedures, on-site field intelligence teams, thorough cyber-risk assessments, as well as comprehensive air security and tactical operations support. To further boost security preparations, the state has allocated a budget of $331,000. This funding is earmarked for the Nevada National Guard, which will be responsible for enhancing Clark County’s security capabilities and emergency triage services throughout the duration of the Grand Prix.

Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill has previously spoken about the significant security challenges associated with the event, noting the substantial threat posed by the anticipated large-scale attendance, among other things. Over 100,000 fans are expected to gather along the 3.8-mile racetrack, a significant portion of which passes through the transformed Las Vegas Boulevard.
