The latest report from the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) revealed that while the betting handle for Arizona sportsbooks dipped in July, the revenue levels surged. Many believe that this showcases the resilience and adaptability of Arizona’s sports betting market.

Betting Handle Down to $323.2 Million

In July, Arizona’s sports betting handle stood at $323.2 million. The bulk of this activity took place online, with $320.2 million being wagered through online platforms.

Retail sportsbooks fell behind, accounting for just $2.4 million. When compared to July of the previous year, this represents a growth of 11.3%. However, the month-on-month data indicates a decline of 17.8% from June’s handle of $393.2 million.

The figures have been attributed to various factors including seasonal sports variations. Since it began in 2021, sports betting in Arizona has seen over $11 billion in total bets.

A Good Month for the State’s Sportsbooks

Despite the monthly dip in the betting handle, July turned out to be a prosperous month for Arizona sportsbooks, which raked in $34.5 million in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) prior to promotions and deductions. This reflects a substantial 24.5% leap from June’s revenue, which stood at $27.7 million.

This growth isn’t just beneficial for operators but also for state finances. In July alone, Arizona accrued nearly $2.7 million in privilege fees, which is levied at a rate of 10% on the AGR.

This is a huge yearly increase of 79% from July 2022 and an impressive monthly rise of 68.8% from June’s figures. Meanwhile, retail operators, who are taxed at 8%, contributed $11,635 to the state. According to PlayUSA:

Breaking it down by Arizona’s online sports betting operators, FanDuel was the top performer in betting handle (total bets) and revenue generated.

A breakdown of operators shows:

  • FanDuel dominated, handling wagers worth $113.66 million and generating a gross revenue of $13.59 million.
  • DraftKings secured the second spot with a betting handle of $102.36 million and a gross revenue of $10.25 million.
  • BetMGM claimed the third position, handling bets worth $43.29 million and reporting an adjusted gross revenue of $5.91 million.
  • Caesars clinched the fourth place with wagers worth $32.61 million, translating to a revenue of $2.47 million.
  • Barstool rounded off the top five sportsbooks in Arizona, boasting $8.95 million in total bets and $659,419 in gross revenue prior to deductions and promotions.

Currently, sports fans in Arizona can choose from 17 online sportsbook apps, and the market is poised for further growth with the possibility of this number rising to 20 in the near future. With the football season in full swing, sports betting activity has increased, which could mean even more positive revenue figures in the months to come.

This data reflects the ongoing success of Arizona’s evolving sports betting industry, indicating that even amid fluctuating betting volumes, the sector continues to be a lucrative venture for operators. In addition, it continues to be a valuable revenue stream for the state and provides an exciting form of entertainment for sports fans across the state.
