Top golfers from around the world are gearing up for the third Major of the year as the 2023 US Open Golf Championship inches closer. This will be the 123rd edition of this top-notch tournament, which will tee off on June 15 at the North Course of Los Angeles Country Club in California.

The stakes are high for the 72-hole stroke play tournament in a season that has been quite unpredictable so far. Jon Rahm won this year’s first Major when he won the Masters ahead of Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. The Spaniard dethroned Scottie Scheffler and became World Number 1.

However, Koepka did not settle for second best at the PGA Championship and won his third title and the fifth Major of his career at the Oak Hill East Course in Pittsford, New York. After completing a hattrick of PGA Championship titles, Koepka will certainly eye another hattrick at the 2023 US Open Golf Championship.

The 33-year-old has already won this competition in 2017 and 2018. The world number 13 will be eager to try and break into the top ten of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Meanwhile, Scheffler finished second at the previous Major and moved back into first place after Rahm’s disaster at the same tournament.

Last year, Matt Fitzpatrick won his first and only Major to date at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The current World Number 8 is eager to break into the top five of the OWGR and is itching to add another Major trophy to his personal cabinet. However, with competitors like Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, and Xander Schauffele ahead of him, it will be quite challenging for Fitzpatrick to get anywhere close to the top five.

The defending champion will surely be under pressure at the Los Angeles Country Club in a field comprising 156 players, with only a few who are top favorites to win as the best golf betting sites gear up for increased traction.

2023 US Open Golf Championship: The Player Field

As always, there will be 156 players at the US Open Golf Championship. Under pre-set criteria, some have gained direct entry into the tournament, while others have snatched a place for themselves via qualifying events. These are the 13 amateurs who are a part of the player field at the 2023 US Open Golf Championship.

While almost all the top-ranked players are ready to feature in this Major, a few will miss it. World Number 11 Will Zalatoris will be out of the rest of the season after he underwent back surgery in April. LIV Golfer Talor Gooch is ineligible to play due to his association with a rival golf circuit that will reportedly soon unite with the PGA tour.

2009 US Open Golf Championship winner Lucas Glover will also miss the Major after the 43-year-old fluffed his lines in the qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, last week. 2010 US Open Champion Graeme McDowell missed out on a playoff by one shot in the qualifier and will not be a part of the 2023 US Open Championship player field.

Michael Block, Webb Simpson, and the three-time US Open winner Tiger Woods will also not feature in this year’s Major.

2023 US Open Golf Championship: The Top Contenders

Three PGA Tour tournaments were held between this year’s second and third Majors. Right after the curtains dropped on the 2023 PGA Championship, the Charles Schwab Challenge commenced in May. Argentine golfer Emiliano Grillo won the competition and finished ahead of Scheffler, who was T3.

Scheffler also finished third in the next tournament, which was the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. The world number 1 finished behind Denny McCarthy and Viktor Hovland, who is gaining momentum. The Norwegian won his fourth PGA Tour title and is hunting for the first Major of his career.

Despite sliding down from the summit after a few disappointing performances, Rahm is still one of the top favorites to win the 2023 US Open Golf Championship. The Spaniard has already won one Major this year when he slipped on the coveted Green Jacket at the Masters after finishing ahead of Koepka and Mickelson.

In addition, this tournament will always remain special for Rahm because this is where he won his first-ever Major in 2021. Those emotions could fuel the fire that guides him to his third Major title. However, there will be a horde of able golfers trying to block his path, and one of them will be Koepka, who has a chance to nab two consecutive Majors.

Koepka knows what it takes to win this competition because he has done it twice. Another golfer with a winning experience on this grass is defending champion Fitzpatrick. The Englishman got the better of Zalatoris and Scheffler last year to lift his maiden Major title. Meanwhile, other names on the list of favorites are McIlroy, Schauffele, and Patrick Cantlay.
