The main race will be a week later, on Sunday, May 28, at 12:45 ET, with plenty of action anticipated on motorsport betting sites.

  • In the qualifying sessions, 34 cars will compete for the 33 available spots on the grid
  • The driver entry list includes nine Indy 500 winners and four rookie drivers
  • Five Honda-powered teams and seven Chevrolet-powered teams will be on the grid

2023 Indianapolis 500: Previous Results

After five enthralling races in the 2023 IndyCar Series, the drivers are now gearing up for the big one in Indianapolis. So far this year, there is no sign of solo driver domination, as all the previous five races had different race winners. The opening race of the season was won by defending Indy 500 champion Marcus Ericcson, who finished ahead of Pato O’Ward and Scott Dixon at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in March.

At the start of April, Ericsson finished eighth in the Grand Prix of Texas, while Josef Newgarden won the race, and O’Ward had to settle for second again, with Alex Palou completing the podium. At the Grand Prix of Long Beach, Kyle Kirkwood acquired the top spot on the podium ahead of Romain Grosjean and Ericsson. Meanwhile, Dixon crashed out of the race after 37 laps and was classified last on the finishing grid.

In the Grand Prix of Alabama, Grosjean came close to snatching P1 after starting from pole position but finished behind Scott McLaughlin. Will Power, who started P11, finished third. Earlier this month, Alex Palou finally nabbed his first win of the season at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis (Road Course). O’Ward started fifth and finished second for the third time this season. Alexander Rossin moved from P10 to third to complete the podium.

2023 Indianapolis 500: Betting Tips

As things stand, Palou is leading in the 2023 IndyCar Series Standings with 174 points. Still without a win this season, O’Ward is only six points behind the Spaniard in second. Ericsson is third with 155 points, and Grosjean and McLaughlin are sitting in fourth and fifth, respectively. Only a solitary point separates the two drivers. However, betting on either of them could not be the best option.

O’Ward, Dixon, Newgarden, and Palou will be the top picks to keep an eye on in the 2023 Indy 500. O’Ward is still young, but at the same time, he has been with Arrow McLaren for four years now. He also has four IndyCar wins, but this season has been a little frustrating for the 24-year-old as he still awaits his first win of the season. Achieving that feat at the Indy 500 will be a marvelous milestone for the Mexican.

Dixon may not be in the top five of the 2023 IndyCar Series Standings. Still, he is certainly a fearless driver, a top competitor, and among the favorites to win the race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Last year, on the same track, a silly error saw him exceed the pitlane speed limit, for which he served a drive-through penalty that spoilt his race toward the end. This time around, the New Zealander will be extra cautious.

Newgarden and Palou have won a Grand Prix each this season and are eager to double that tally at the Indy 500. The former is eager to inch closer to the top of the standings, while the latter is already at the summit but will want to pull clear of the pack. Interestingly, only one of the four mentioned favorites has won on this track. There are eight more former Indy 500 winners, but their chances of winning again on this track are low.

2023 Indianapolis 500: Odds

Pato O’Ward +700
Scott Dixon +700
Alex Palou +800
Josef Newgarden +800
Marcus Ericsson +1000

2023 Indianapolis 500: Predictions

In the 2022 Indy 500, Dixon started on pole with Palou and Rinus Veekay on the first row. However, pole position does not guarantee a win, and that was the case last year because Ericsson, who was trailing for most of the race after starting on the second row, ended up defending up front against O’Ward, who had started P7 on the third row.

Finishing second on multiple occasions shows consistency, but O’Ward is not one of those drivers who will settle for anything but a win. Last year, he came extremely close but had to settle for P2. Grosjean would have been amongst the favorites as well, but his crash last year has left spectators in doubt.

The fight will be between Arrow McLaren and Chip Ganassi Racing for the win. O’Ward is set to be the solo competitor from McLaren, while Chip Ganassi’s trio of Palou, Dixon, and Ericsson will try to spoil the party for the Mexican. Desperation to win will be high because double points will be at stake when the 200-lap race begins at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
