History of Sports Betting in Louisiana
Louisiana has a unique gambling history that stretches back to 1753 when the first government-run casino was opened. The state became exempt from the nationwide gambling ban in 1812 and created the state lottery in 1866. However, the lottery would be closed in 1895, shutting down the gambling scene until the 1920s when wagering on pari-mutuel events held at the New Orleans Fair Grounds became legal.
